A Respectable Trade by Philippa Gregory, 4 out of 5 stars
This is definitely one of the girlier books I’ve read, romance isn’t usually my thing, but this one was pretty good. This isn’t exactly a traditional bodice-ripper type of romance book like those with Fabio gracing the cover, it’s a fairly brutal account of slavery and the story of a woman who marries into slave ownership and falls in love with a slave. I can’t find many books with this kind of story (outside of straight up erotica) where a white woman falls in love with a black slave, although I’ve seen a few with a white man falling in love with a black slave woman. So I almost gave 5 stars just for being a unique story.
The story itself was interesting and I was really surprised at how I got sucked into it, although I didn’t exactly like the characters. In fact the main character pissed me off most of the time. I don’t want to give any spoilers but if you like historical fiction then give it a try, even if you don’t like romance.
