A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess, 2 out of 5 stars, DNF
This is probably the most controversial review since I’m giving such a well-respected book a low rating. I considered giving it 1 star but I absolutely loved the movie and couldn’t bring myself to give the book a 1 star rating.
I didn’t get past the first chapter of this book, although I did skim through much of it to see if the writing style changed. My number one complaint is the made up language, or slang, that the author uses. It made the book completely unreadable for me. A little bit of made-up jargon can really enhance a story, but for this book it was every other word and I couldn’t understand anything, and it continues through the entire book. I’m sure it can be said that I “missed the point” or “didn’t stick with it long enough” or whatever excuse fans will give me. But like I said I love the movie, I love the summary of the book, but the writing style was completely unreadable.
