Do you need supplements?
Supplements are a touchy subject because there are legitimate reasons to use them, but they are also a multi-billion dollar market with the potential to be laden with gimmicks and scams. The short answer is to listen to your body. If you feel fine, there’s really no reason to supplement.
What supplements do I use?
This is an ever changing list, and I’m bad about taking them regularly. I tend to bounce around between the following:
DHA fish oil
Cod liver oil
D3 plus calcium (definitely in the winter!)
magnesium (if I’m feeling constipated, having insomnia, or muscle cramps)
multi-vitamin (this one is pretty rare)
iron (only during my period)
What are situations where supplementation may be necessary?
You have a deficiency
You are on a vegan or vegetarian diet
Women during their period (iron)
Depression and seasonal affective disorder (D3)
A diet low in fish (DHA or fish oil)
You are pregnant or trying to conceive (prenatal and DHA)
