Carnivore Diet 12 Day Update
I’ve been on the (mostly) carnivore diet for 2 weeks and it’s done so much to improve my IBS and fibromyalgia symptoms! This post is to discuss the pros and cons I’ve been dealing with and please comment your experience also.
What I’m eating: meat (mainly beef), eggs, and butter. Also salt and pepper, and some rosemary. I’ll add any cheats to the descriptions.
Day 1 and 2: Excessive thirst and excessive urination (even after trying not to drink too much water). Apparently this can be a side effect of ketosis and is fairly common. I experience insomnia and fatigue. The positive is how insanely satiated I’ve been! Cravings are absent except for chocolate.
Day 3: Basically the same as day 1 and 2 but I experienced the most amazing poop I’ve ever had in my life. I had no idea that removing fruits, vegetables, and any trace of fiber could lead to such a positive experience in the bathroom. Without going tmi, everything was effortless and solid. I’m making such a big deal of this because with IBS you’re generally going too much or too little, or in my case alternating between constipation and diarrhea. This was such a big change that I didn’t expect so soon.
Day 4: No symptoms. The first time I gave into my chocolate craving by making ice cream out of almond milk, coconut milk, cocoa, and splenda. This just happened to be what I had on hand.
Day 5: I woke up with a horrendous fibromyalgia flare up, I mean so much pain that I could hardly get out of bed! Not sure which ingredient did it, or a combination of all of them, but man I paid for that ice cream. The first sign of gut issues was in the evening, I experienced some gas, bloating, and constipation.
Day 6: Back to carnivore diet, no cheat, felt better.
Day 7: Mostly good but felt kind of bloated, possibly from pms.
Day 8: Still feeling great other than insomnia issues. Started taking magnesium which helped a little.
Day 9: I was craving sushi so I ordered sashimi, I think there was wheat in some of the order. There was sauce on the eel but I looove eel and tried to pat it dry with a paper towel in hopes that would work. Apparently it did not. I later experienced a lot of bloating, hunger (until now everything had been very satiating), gas, and felt like I was going to have diarrhea but never did. Just a very uncomfortable day for gut health. My fibro pain was also increasing. Interestingly, I slept a little better.
Day 10-12: My symptoms these days are a little harder to judge since I’m on my period and experiencing the normal symptoms like bloating, back pain, cramps, cravings (mainly chocolate), migraines and fatigue. I was disappointed the diet didn’t seem to help my period issues, but then again I had quite a few cheats just before then. i’ll try harder next month though. On day 10 I did have a decent amount of energy finally and worked out! One weird symptom is some jaw pain from chewing so much meat, I’ve suffered with TMJ my whole life so that could be the cause. It’s starting to get better though.
OVERALL PROS: teeth feel so freaking clean, not fuzzy at all even when I indulge in a little chocoalte,. My energy level is getting more consistent, I have periods of significant energy but it’s not stimulating like drinking caffeine, but more like a mental clarity. Less stress than other diets such as gluten free because it’s so easy to know what to eat (I always know what I’ll have for breakfast etc). Saving money at the grocery store, even though meat can be pricey it’s the only thing I’m eating and lasts for awhile since it’s so filling. Satiation is such a huge benefit, I’m the kind of person that used to be ALWAYS hungry and always craving carbs.
OVERALL CONS: fatigue in the beginning, eating trigger foods seem to affect me more, insomnia, jaw pain from chewing, my period was kind of weird (started with very light spotting for a few days then went into a normal period, total days were longer) and the symptoms were the same as before.
